BMRA Disappointment over Scrap Metal Dealer’s Act Decision

December 2017 saw disappointment for the British Metals Recycling Association as the Home Office took the decision to leave the Scrap Metal Dealer’s Act unaltered.

The Act
Introduced in 2013 as a response to increasing occurrences of metal theft between 2009 and 2011, the Act brought in strict licensing requirements for scrap metal dealers, identity checks for those selling scrap metal and making it an offence for dealers to purchase scrap metal for cash.

The Stats
Despite a Home Office review of the SMDA stating that thefts have dropped from nearly 62,000 a year in 2012/13 to around 16,000 in 2015/16, the BMRA strongly […]

BMRA Calls for Tougher Enforcement of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act

The British Metals Recycling Association has called for tougher enforcement of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act. The Act came into effect in late 2013, and outlawed the payment of cash for scrap metal by recyclers. The calls for tougher enforcement stems from raised concerns over the increasing use of cash by some illegal operators.

According to the BMRA, which made the comments in response to a Home Office review of the SMDA, “There is a clear correlation between interventions and effective enforcement the legislation, and the number of recorded metal theft offences”.

At Entrec, we use our cash card facility for customers […]

Recycling and the Construction Industry

Let’s focus on how recycling can benefit your construction business directly.

When you pay someone to haul away scrap metal without giving any thought to sorting and recycling those materials, you’re letting them drive money right off your job site. In fact, usually the haulers will sort it all themselves and then sell it for a tidy profit, on top of the fee you paid them to take it.

A construction or demolition company that doesn’t have a scrap management plan involving recycling may not only look out-of-touch […]
